Whether speaking or writing, we humans use language to influence the thinking of one another; but some individuals and groups try to influence—even manipulate and control—our thoughts. In order to avoid being unconsciously manipulated, we must understand how language functions. If we do, we can distinguish actual arguments, information, and reasons from the persuasive techniques that others may use to promote our acceptance of their viewpoints.

Additionally, people sometimes use euphemistic language to make themselves sound more important and to boost their sense of self-worth. For example, a man may say that he is “a sanitation engineer” instead of a “garbage man.” Or a woman may say that she is “a beauty consultant” instead of a “hairdresser.

So who was Socrates?

Most of what we do know about Socrates comes from the writings of another very important person in Greek history, Plato. Both Socrates and Plato were very important Greek philosophers of ancient Greece.

Socrates was a Greek philosopher who is to this day, widely credited for laying the foundation for Western philosophy. Socrates' most important philosophy, from what we know gathered from Plato’s writings, were: the necessity of doing what one thinks is right even in the face of universal opposition, and the need to pursue knowledge even when opposed. Socrates’ main mission was to educate the citizens of Athens.

Socrates actually wrote nothing, because he felt that knowledge was something to be gained by living and interacting in the world. He had several dialogues with the people of that time, and his philosophical inquiries of the people consisted of questioning them on the positions they held on certain ideas, to the point of having them contradict themselves, therefore showing them that what they originally asserted to be true, was in fact not the case. Basically, in all dialogues he had with others, he was cross-examining them, in order that they would look deeper within themselves, and to show them that they actually knew nothing at all. In fact, Socrates himself radically proclaimed to know nothing at all but that he knows nothing about anything.

Socrates was regarded as a teacher by others, but he did not think that of himself. He also refused payment for any of his work with students and many of them were very loyal to him. The parents of said youths were said to often be displeased with his influence upon them, and his earlier association with opponents of the democratic organization had already made him a controversial political figure.

In this week class, we had been introduced to the rule of ten which really important in doing the critical review. Since the rule of ten really important to us, our lecturer teach us the best way to mesmerise all the rules in the most easiest way which is to use the first letter of every rule and make it to our own sentence. My sentence is...

• Umbrellas inside the house - you will drown the next time you swim; or, opening an umbrella indoors will bring you bad luck.
  
• No reds allowed - Don't wear red when there's lightning, or else it may strike you.
  
• Broken reflection - 7 years of bad luck if you break a mirror. (This one originated in the Middle Ages where mirrored glass was extremely expensive; anyone who broke the large mirror of the lord or lady of the land was costing them a lot of money and destroying something likely not replaceable. A person could be put in jail if the lord of the land was angry enough.)
  
• Don't let a black cat cross your path; it will bring you bad luck. (I suppose you could trip over a black cat in the dark and break your leg, but really the coat color of a cat has nothing to do with luck either way.)
• "Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck"
  
• Rain on your wedding day is a good omen.
  
• Do not ride a bicycle if you're a woman because you will not get pregnant.
  
• When you are getting married, do not wear your wedding gown before the wedding or else your wedding will canceled.
  
• Hanging a horseshoe on a wall with ends pointing up brings good luck.
  
• Stepping on a crack in the sidewalk will break your mother's back.
